Sewing Machines Have Changed The Way Clothes Are Manufactured
Many machines were developed during the industrial revolution. Prominent among those were the sewing machine. Sewing machines changed the way people made clothes. Initially, they were only good for sewing heavier fabrics, such as leather, but gradually, silks and woolen dresses were made with the help of a sewing machine.
The concept of fashion took on a new meaning, as tailors and designers gained more freedom to design and create dresses made with more delicate fabrics, such as silk. The fashion industry saw a big boom. The sewing machine also made an entry into many homes, giving women the much needed help with their sewing work.
The first sewing machine was conceived by a British inventor Thomas Saint. But the idea remained on pen and paper only. Barthelemmy Thimonnier, a French tailor, devised the first fully functional sewing machine and installed 80 of the machines in his factory. The factory was burnt down by rioting tailors who were afraid of losing their livelihood.
That was the end of his adventures with the sewing machine. The credit for developing and marketing proper sewing machine models goes to Isaac Merritt Singer. His name became synonymous with the sewing machine. Now, there are many varieties of this product that can stitch many materials, such as silk, silk satin, silk cotton, silk chiffon and the polyester fabric, to name a few.
The smoothness of silk fabrics present some difficulties while cutting and then stitching on sewing machines. Those can be easily overcome with a few corrective measures. The silk fabric should be pinned to tissue while cutting. While stitching, tissue should also be put on the seam line.
Sharp scissors cut its fabrics faster and do not allow for slippage. Using a flat bottomed pressure-foot and applying more foot pressure takes care of the slippage of the silk fabric from the machine. Different types of needles and threads are used for sewing it as well.
Silks stitched on sewing machines take beautiful shapes. Its fabrics come in vibrant colors making them perfect for the maximum creativity in the making of garments. But care must be taken to ensure that there is no damage to the silk fabrics while cutting and stitching.
Sharp scissors should be used to cut its fabrics faster. The pins used for pinning the cloth to tissues should be rust free. If these small precautionary measures are taken, then stitching its clothes can be an enjoyable experience, thus producing beautiful and colorful dresses, silk ties and silk scarves.
