How to Reset a User Password & Registry in Windows XP

    • 1). Insert your Windows XP installation disk into your CD-ROM drive and start your computer.

    • 2). Press any key on your keyboard when prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD."

    • 3). Press "Enter" once the CD has finished booting.

    • 4). Press "F8" to accept the Licensing Agreement.

    • 5). Press "R" to being the repair process.

    • 6). Reboot your computer when prompted.

    • 7). Press "Shift" and "F10" at the same time when you see "Installing Devices" and a progress bar to open a command prompt.

    • 8). Type "Nusrmgr.cpl" and hit "Enter" to gain access to your user accounts.

    • 9). Move your cursor to the account you want to access by using your arrow keys.

      Hit "Enter" to open your account.

      Choose "Remove Password" to reset your password.

    • 12

      Close the prompt and resume the repair process. Your registry will be reset and configured back to factory settings during the repair process.

      Type your product KEY ID when prompted. Your KEY ID is found on the sleeve that came with your Windows XP installation CD. It can also be found on the back of the Microsoft Windows XP Users Manual.
