How Does Hair Color Work?

    Introduction

    • Because of hair color dye, you can have hair just about any color under the rainbow with just a few hours of work. You can even choose whether you want the dye to be permanent, or only temporary and washable after a certain amount of hair washes. Whether you want to get rid of a few gray hairs, or change your look entirely, with hair dye, almost any look is possible, changing the fashion world forever.

    Bonding

    • For hair color to bond to your individual strands of hair it needs a series of chemicals to help both bind the products, as well as help the coloring sink deeper into the hair structure itself. The active chemicals in hair dye that achieve this are ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. When the hair dye is applied to the hair, the chemicals seep deep in to the cell structure of your hair. The coloring, which is mixed in with these chemicals, seeps in with the chemicals and binds itself to the cells of your hair.

    Types

    • There are three main types of hair color treatment: permanent, demi-permanent and semi-permanent. Permanent hair coloring formulas use both hydrogen peroxide and ammonia to expand the color-infused hair molecules. This keeps the dye from running out of or being washed out of the hair. This dye is permanent until new hair growth occurs. The second type of hair coloring treatment is demi-permanent. Demi-permanent hair dye also uses hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, but to a lesser extent than permanent hair dye. This allows the color to bond to the hair, but does not hold it for longer than about a month before it washes out completely. The final type of treatment is semi-permanent. Semi-permanent hair color uses ammonia, but not hydrogen peroxide. This allows the dye to only bond to the hair for approximately 10 hair washes.
