Lasik Eye Surgery: Curiosity, Fear, Myths, Sigh of Relief, Awe€¦ There must be no other procedure that evokes so many varied responses from the common man. Lasik, short for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis is a surgery in which laser is used to correct one's vision. As science progresses, Laser eye surgery technology is advancing at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, so are misconceptions about Lasik. A Lasik Surgeon answers a few queries about Lasik that commonly plague our minds€¦

€ How can laser eye surgery correct my sight?
Near or far sightedness is caused because your eye ball is longer or shorter than normal. In Lasik eye surgery, vision is corrected by reshaping your cornea which helps the rays of light bend better and fall precisely on the retina (light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye).

€ Can anybody undergo Lasik?
Lasik eye surgery may not be suitable for everybody. It is very essential that one get an opinion from a well-trained Lasik Surgeon to know if one is a right candidate for Laser Eye Surgery. You need to be above 18, not have too thin / irregular / bulging corneas (outer transparent layer of the eye) raised eye pressures, etc. However, with the newer technology called ReLEx Femto Lasik, people with thinner corneas can now undergo Lasik.

€ Is there any new advancement in Lasik?
Traditional Lasik eye surgery is done in two steps: Initially, a blade is used to create a flap on the cornea. Then this flap is lifted to apply a laser beam which reshapes the cornea.
A new technique called ReLEx Lasik is the most minimally invasive flapless, bladeless surgery which corrects refractive errors with great precision and speed.
Another state-of-the-art technology called Lasik Xtra helps minimise the weakness of cornea seen after traditional Lasik by pre-emptively strengthening it alongside the Lasik surgery.

€ I am wary of having my eye cut. Is there any way that a blade not be used?
If you are not on the best of terms with needles and blades, ReLEx Femto Lasik is the answer to your prayers. This new technique eliminates the need to create large cuts or flaps with a blade (as in the conventional Lasik) since it creates a 3-5 mm keyhole with a laser, thus making it a truly bladeless and minimally invasive surgery.

€ Will it be too painful?
The eye might be a little itchy after the procedure, but the anaesthetic drops ensure that you do not experience any pain during the procedure. The surgeon can always prescribe a pain medication for you.

€ For how many years will the effects last?
Lasik will permanently remove your current spectacle numbers. As you age, the visual result of Lasik will remain in place but you would probably need glasses for reading after your 40's.
