Updo Hairstyles for Children

    French Braid

    • A French braid is an elegant type of braid that is considered an updo when the end of the braid is tucked under itself and pinned in place. The French braid gathers hair beginning at the crown of the head and weaves the hair in and out, until the braid becomes narrower towards the bottom. Once the hair is secured with a band at the end, the hair can be tucked under or even looped into a circular bun. When you pin a French braid in place, you want to hide the hairband at the end, so the hairband should be covered by other parts of the braid.

    Twist with Curls

    • The twist with curls is a classic updo option for little girls. Whether girls have naturally curly hair, or you have to curl the hair with rollers, the twist with curls gives children an elegant hairstyle that is pulled back at the sides and then poofs up at the top -- with the pile of curls resting on the crown of the head. A lot of pins are necessary for holding the hair in the back in place.

    Formal Buns

    • A formal bun is a quicker updo option for kids, but it still looks dressy because the hair is pulled back. Formal buns can be tight, such as the way ballerinas wear their hair, or the buns can be loose and expose some curl. In a loose-bun style, the hair is not tied into the bun using a hairband. Rather, various strands of hair are pinned back one by one so that the shape of a bun takes form. Formal buns can be positioned in the back of the head or to one of the sides.

    Partial Updos

    • Partial updos are still updos, but with a partial 'do, some of the hair in the back of the head remains down and loose. A partial updo is appropriate for the child who is not able to sit still for too long, because it takes less time to accomplish a partial updo than a full updo. Partial updos can involve braids that go above the crown of the head from ear to ear, with a bunch of curls in the back, or it can be simpler by pinning up a portion of the hair with the lower section of the hair down.
