    • 1). Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This is sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens are clearly labeled to indicate that they protect against both types of the sun's rays.

    • 2). Know how SPF ratings work. SPF, or sun protection factor, is based on the amount of time it would normally take one's skin to burn. You simply multiply the time it would normally take you to burn by the SPF number on the sunscreen. If your unprotected skin would normally get a sunburn after 10 minutes in the sun, you could be out in the sun for 100 minutes before burning if you wear SPF 10 sunscreen.

    • 3). Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. It takes this long for your skin to fully absorb the ingredients that protect it from the sun's rays.

    • 4). Make sure the body sunscreen you choose is at least SPF-15, but wear higher-SPF sunscreen on your face. Your facial skin tends to be thinner and more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body.

    • 5). Use generously. Don't worry about applying too much sunscreen, as most individuals don't use enough. You should use one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount you could fit in a shot glass, to cover exposed skin on your body. Don't forget to apply it to the back of your neck, your ears, and any exposed areas on your scalp.

    • 6). Reapply every two hours. If you'll be outside for extended periods of time, set an alarm to remind yourself to reapply every two hours. Also, reapply immediately after swimming or sweating.

    • 7). Check the expiration date. Sunscreen does expire. Don't use expired sunscreens as they will not provide adequate protection.
