Joey Badass Is The Future of Rap

Joey Badass is an 18 year old rapper out of Brooklyn, New York. His birth name is Jo-Vaughn Scott and he was born on January 20, 1995 and he was the first in his immediate Jamaican family to be born in the United States. He was a student at Edward R. Murrow High School in order to study acting, but as time went on, he converted to music around the 9th grade. Rapping became Joey Badass's main focus. Jo-Vaughn tells the media that he began writing poety and music at the age of 11. He began rapping under the name JayOhVee but eventually changed it to Joey Badass. Jo-Vaughn says the reason for the name change was due to the fact that it was popular for rappers to have more cynical names at the time. "It was what sounded cool at the time, it just fit my mood," is what he said about the name change. Joey and a few of his high school classmates formed a collective group know as Progressive Era or Pro Era for short. His classmates go by the name of Capital STEEZ, Powers Pleasant, and CJ Fly. Joey has received high critical acclaim and recognition from industry. Joey Badass is has released 2 mixtapes so far and is expecting an album soon.

Joey Badass - 1999 Mixtape

1999 was Joey Badass first solo mixtape. It was released on June 12, 2012, and immediately created a buzz aroound Joey in the undergroup rap community. The album was named 38th best album of 2012 by Complex Magazine and the best mixtape of 2012 by HipHopDX.com. A video for the song "Waves" on the mixtape was released in the same month. Before the mixtape dropped, Mac Miller reached out to Joey through twitter to collaborate with him on a track. Joey accepted the offer and was featured on the song "America" and opened for Mac at the Roseland Ballroom in April of 2012. In early 2012, Joey and Capital STEEZ uploaded a video for "Survival Tactics" to their YouTube channel "PROfckingERA". It samples the 1999 song Styles of Beyond. Joey's verse from the video was featured by MTV News during a RapFix Live segment. He then appeared as a guest on Sucker Free the following month. In February of 2012, Pro Era released their debut mixtape The Seccs Tape. Joey Badass started a 30 day tour in July.

On December 21, 2012, Joey and the Pro Era released the mixtape P.E.E.P: The aPROcalypse, and 3 days after the release, it was announced that Capital STEEZ, Pro Era member and close friend of Joey, had died due to a suspected suicide.
There were also rumors that Joey would be signing with Roc Nation, Jay-Z's record label, but Badass put those rumors to sleep when he stated that he would rather remain independent than sign with a major label right now.

Joey Badass - Cinematic Music

Back in October of 2010, Joey Badass put up a video of himself freestyling on YouTube. The video was passed around eventually made it to World Star Hip Hop and caught the attention of a lot of people. One of those people was Jonny Shipes, president of Cinematic Music group. Shipes is also the manager of rappers Big K.R.I.T. and Smoke DZA. Shipes reached out to Joey Badass via twitter and talked to him about becoming his manager. The two spoke and Jonny Shipes became Joey's manager. Since then, the Pro Era Collective has been signed with Cinematic Music Group. Joey Badass is the future of rap.
