Point No Point Fishing Areas in Canada

104 7
    • Point No Point is a geographic feature on the almost razor-straight south coast of Vancouver Island. It gets its name from the fact that it can only be seen from some angles.

The nearest community, Sooke, is a center for offshore and river salmon fishing. Besides salmon, halibut catches of more than 200 lbs. have been reported there.

    Sooke River

    • The Sooke River is a small stream the flows south into the Sooke Basin and the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Sooke Lake, where the river begins, is a restricted watershed area, so only a little over three miles (5 km) of this river is fishable. That stretch is rich in salmon and trout. It supports a wide variety of river game fish, including cutthroat trout, Chinook salmon and coho salmon. The population of steelhead salmon is on the increase because of regular hatchery releases. Fly fishermen go after chum salmon in the river's estuary and lower reaches. An appropriate license for fishing in British Columbia is required.

    Sooke Potholes Provincial Park

    • The best place to see the annual Sooke River salmon run is in the Sooke Potholes Provincial Park. The 18-acre (7.3-hectare) park, is three miles north of West Coast Highway 14. It surrounds a number of deep rock pools, carved out by glaciation during the Ice Age. The action of water, tumbling large bolders in the bedrock of the river created these unusual, polished formations and depressions.

The Sooke River is a spawning ground for both Chinook and coho salmon. Catch-and-release salmon fishing is allowed in selected areas within this park. Fishing restrictions vary with the seasons, so fishermen should check the current regulations of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

    Ocean Fishing

    • Fisherman can go ocean fishing for salmon in the waters off Sooke, near Point No Point, for most of the year. The summer months are best for coho, sockeye and pink salmon. Chinook salmon run the end of May through to the end of September. According to local charter company Sunny Shores, good salmon fishing is also available in winter and spring as is bottom fishing for halibut. Salmon as large as 30 lbs. are not uncommon and, according to B.C. Sport Fishing, a 206-lb. halibut was landed by fishermen in two separate boats.

Sunny Shores runs ocean fishing charters on its 22-foot Double Eagle. It also operates motel, marina and camping facilities for fisherman with their own boats.
