Energy Drinks - Short Term Ascent, Long Term Decline

It's very straightforward to figure out that energy drinks such as 5 Hour Energy, Rockstar, and Amp will give you a quick increase in energy.
There is a reason they are called energy drinks aren't they? Given the high-stress lives that most people live (or forced to live), they can be forgiven for taking drinks that allow them that momentary boost of energy to perform a high level in whatever activity they are performing because they are expected to perform at such a high level constantly.
If these drinks deliver that short term boost and they feel it, then there is no reason to stop taking them.
Here are the positives of these drinks:
  • They give a great boost of energy
  • They taste great
  • They increase short-term focus and alertness
  • Although most common energy drinks contain lots of sugar, there are low-carb or sugarless alternatives
However, many of the common constituents in these drinks, such as caffeine and taurine, come with some serious side effects such as:
  • Potential insomnia
  • Decreased performance under stress
  • Low recovery process after exhaustive physical activity - a.

    "The Crash"
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Long term damage to your heart, lungs, liver, spleen
  • Weight gain if no physical activity is undertaken
  • If taken too often for too long, potential addiction may result
  • Will give you the shakes if your stomach isn't at least somewhat full
  • Rapid energy depletion after the initial burst of energy.
  • Since caffeine is a diuretic, dehydration occurs.
    This is especially bad if you want to get a good workout in as your muscles will not perform to its maximum capacity for very long.
  • Increase in blood pressure
  • There have been several instances of cardiac arrests during performances which have killed young athletes.
  • Increase in insulin resistance which can lead to long term diabetes
"The Crash" that is common among these drinks is quite well-known and most people are willing to tolerate it just for that short term benefit.
However, the long term consequences of continuously taking these drinks can be destructive.
There are many publications in research journals which say that these drinks, even the "organic" ones, have horrible side effects.
The targets of those side long term side effect are your liver, kidneys, and heart.
The more often you take these drinks and formulas, the more likely you are to develop long-term damage to your vital organs.
So, if you are a regular energy drink or energy shot taker, just know that they might give you what you are looking for but, at a cost to your long-term health.
