How to Upgrade Windows Vista Home
- 1). Select the Windows version that fits your needs. To upgrade from Vista Home Basic, choose from Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate. Make sure to select a Windows version compatible with the computer. For example, a 32-bit computer cannot update to Windows 7 64-bit. The upgrade can be done with a disc for installing the new operating system or a download from Microsoft.
- 2). Insert the installation disc into the computer's optical drive if using the disc upgrade option. Open the installation file if upgrading with a download. "Setup" should load automatically; if it does not, click the "Start" menu and select "Computer," then double-click the optical drive and double-click "Setup.exe."
- 3). Click "Install Now" after Setup loads. The following window will request that you download important updates for the installation. Make sure the computer is connected to the Internet and download the updates. The updates will then install automatically.
- 4). Read through the license agreement after the updates install. Check the box agreeing to the license terms in order to proceed with the installation. The next screen will ask what type of installation you want to perform. Select "Upgrade." With an upgrade, your personal settings and programs will remain intact.
- 5). Wait as the upgrade installs. During this time, the computer may turn itself on and off several times. The installation process can take several minutes. When the installation is finished, the computer will restart automatically. After restarting, the computer will have the benefits of the upgraded operating system while maintaining your previous settings.
