How to Safely Light Up a Jack-o-Lantern
Instructions
1Select a light source. You may want to stay with the low-tech candle, or if you are leaving your jack-o-lantern out and worried about fire safety, you can buy all kinds of small bulbs that will fit inside your pumpkin.
2
Select a candle. The candle should be relatively small to fit inside the pumpkin, but not too thin. A one inch diameter should do the trick. Tea-light candles work really well.
3
Get the candle down to the right length. It should be short enough that the flame won't burn your cover.
4
Open the top of the jack-o-lantern. Press the candle down into the bottom of the pumpkin. If necessary, cut a little bit out of the bottom so that the candle fits snugly inside.
5
Light the candle with a long-stemmed match or an electric kitchen lighter.
6
Be safe! Keep an eye on your jack-o-lantern. Some health advocates are saying that jack-o-lantern candles can burn kids if not properly placed or attended.
