Painting Over a Vinyl Cabinet Cover
- 1). Sand the vinyl with 220-grit sandpaper until it no longer has a shine. This creates a rough surface for the paint to adhere to.
- 2). Wash the cabinet with trisodium phosphate. Rinse with clear water and dry thoroughly. Your usual housecleaning supplies will work here, such as a bucket, sponge and towel.
- 3). Apply a liquid deglosser to the vinyl using a clean rag. Follow with a dry cloth to smooth the surface and wipe up any extra deglosser.
- 4). Prime the vinyl surface with a high-quality, 100-percent acrylic primer, using a sponge roller or bristle paintbrush. Allow the primer to cure according to package instructions before proceeding.
- 5). Apply a coat of paint using a sponge roller or bristle brush. Use 100-percent acrylic paint. Allow it to cure according to the package instructions and then apply a second coat.
