- 1). Discontinue the use of insecticides. Although insecticides control common garden pests such as aphids and mealybugs, these types of chemicals are actually harmful to earthworms and other beneficial insects.
- 2). Provide the proper amount of water for your garden. Earthworms must have a form of moisture to survive, but will drown if there is standing water. Soil should be damp to the touch, but not overly saturated.
- 3). Apply leaf mold to the soil's surface each spring. Leaf mold is leaves that have been chopped and partially decomposed. Collect and chop fallen leaves in the fall and add two to three inches of leaf mold to the soil each spring.
- 4). Add additional organic matter to the garden throughout the year. Compost, manure and even grass clippings are a source of food for earthworms.
