How to Make a Diorama of a Landform
- 1). Paint the bottom of the pizza box with blue poster paint.
- 2). Print a map legend on the two sheets of paper. Use blue to represent water, green to represent grasslands, yellow for sandy regions such as desert or beach, and brown for mountains.
- 3). Glue the legend sheets to the top of the pizza box.
- 4). Draw lines with magic markers to highlight the areas you will use to represent the various landforms. Make sure to set aside a region for an island.
- 5). Mix a small container of glue and blue paint to represent the areas of water.
- 6). Paint a layer of glue over the regions that will contain land masses.
- 7). Lay down a thin layer of clay over the glue. Wait for the glue to dry before continuing.
- 1). Mold a double handful of modeling clay into a roughly conical shape. Place the cone in the region that you wish to represent mountains. If you need multiple mountains, make more cones as needed. Press each cone firmly into place so that it sticks to the existing clay base.
- 2). Roll a small ball of clay in your hands. Flatten it into a smooth ovoid shape. Press it into the region you wish to represent a hill. Repeat the process as needed to represent multiple hills.
- 3). Carve features (such as streams or valleys) into the elevated areas using a butter knife. Smooth out unnatural areas using your fingers.
- 4). Dust the surface of the elevated regions with flour to add slight texture to the areas. If you want a more craggy look, sprinkle the elevated regions with cat litter as well.
- 5). Coat the mountain regions with brown poster paint and the hillocks with green paint. Accent them with gnarled twigs or pine sprigs as needed.
- 1). Apply glue to regions that will represent gentle coastal beaches, deserts, and river shorelines.
- 2). Pour sand over the glued areas. Allow several hours for the glue to dry and pour off the excess sand.
- 3). Apply glue to areas you wish to texture as craggy land, such as rocky coastlines or badlands.
- 4). Sprinkle cat litter over the glue-covered areas. Allow several hours to dry and then shake off the excess.
- 5). Paint regions with watered-down paint to impart the hue that represents the main landform.
- 1). Press shapes into landforms to represent lakes or streams using your fingers or the knife if needed.
- 2). Pour your blue glue mixture into recesses that represent rivers, streams or lakes.
- 3). Apply glue to twigs, grass and other detail items as desired and press them into the regions where they are needed.
- 4). Apply a thick coat of white correction fluid to surfaces you wish to label. Allow it to dry thoroughly before proceeding.
- 5). Label the regions using a colored marker. When you are done, you should have regions representing the major landforms.
