Haircuts for Dry Frizzy Hair
- Avoid short hairstyles such as bobs and shags. Short hairstyles actually make hair more puffy and highlight frizziness. Also, avoid blunt cuts, which have a tendency to puff up near the bottom making the ends of your hair look more frizzy and damaged. Heavily layered cuts also accentuate puffiness because the shorter layers pull hair up toward the top of the head. Do not allow your stylist to use a razor on the ends as this will make hair even more frizzy. Slide cutting techniques should always be avoided as well. Generally, stay away from cuts that have blunt edges and too many choppy, piecey layers throughout the hair.
- Medium-length cuts and long cuts are best for dry, frizzy hair. Long hair weighs strands down, softening frizziness and eliminating puffiness. Medium-length cuts that fall a few inches below the shoulders produce a similar effect of toning down frizz. Add side-swept bangs to defer attention away from dry hair near the top of your head. You can also add a few light, face-framing layers below the chin to give hair some movement and texture.
For curly hair that is dry and frizzy, let it grow as long as possible to weigh strands down. When you can't grow it too long, try to at least grow it two to three inches past your shoulders. Have your stylist cut the ends of your hair at a slight angle instead of cutting straight across. Light layers cut throughout the hair will give definition to curly hair. - Frizzy, dry hair cannot be fixed overnight. It may take several months or even years of proper care to reduce frizz and bring back moisture to thirsty strands. Condition hair every day but shampoo sparingly. Washing hair too often strips it of naturally moisturizing oils produced in the scalp. Limit washing to twice a week or even less. Use a leave-in conditioner at least once a day to replenish moisture in dry strands. Use a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment about once a month.
Do not blow dry or use hot styling tools as heat will dry out hair even further, increasing frizz and puffiness. Use a wide-tooth comb and not a bristled hair brush to detangle hair. A brush creates friction when pressed against hair resulting in frizz. When drying hair, do not rub the towel against your locks. Blot to absorb excess moisture.
