Preparing Your String

• One easy way to prepare your beading string is to tie one end of the string to the clasp, then bead the necklace and tie the other end to the remaining half of the clasp. This is a simple means of stringing a necklace. But most beading string will eventually wear out, so this is not the most durable choice. For a professional look and a long-lasting finished product, consider using a flexible wire cord, such as Tiger Tail, to string your necklace. For this method, place two metal crimp beads onto your cord about 2 inches from the end. String the clasp on, then feed the end of the cord back through both crimp beads and pull until the cord is nearly tight around the clasp. Using a pair of needle nose pliers, crush the crimp beads so that they hold the cord firmly, then trim the short end of the wire. The necklace should be finished in the same manner using crimp beads and the other half of the clasp.
  
  

Bead Colors

• Arguably the most prevalent aspect of a beaded necklace is the color of the beads used. When choosing bead colors, keep in mind the outfits that you or the intended recipient of the necklace are likely to wear and pick complementary beads. While at times it can be a subtle choice to choose beads of similar colors for a smooth and simple look, consider beads that contrast in color so they will stand out from one another.
  
  

Beading Patterns

• When creating a beading pattern for your necklace, there are two major qualities to keep in mind: size and color. The size of the beads will affect the texture of your necklace. For example, alternating one small bead and then one large bead will cause a bumpy and bubbly effect, whereas stringing ten small beads and one large bead will give a smooth look with subtle accents. Also consider alternating colors, or accenting your chosen pattern with a contrasting bead color. Be creative and use your imagination; there are endless possibilities.
  
  

Focal Points

• For a simple look, you may want to string your bead necklace in the same pattern from one end to the other without any additions. However, for a more visually interesting piece, consider selecting a focal point bead or pendant for the center of your necklace. This could be a unique bead that is larger than the rest, or it could be a pendant that will hang down below your string of beads, providing an additional dimension to your finished necklace.
