So you're interested in entering the Blackberry world, but want to first sound like you have some knowledge with your friends and family? Have no fear, as I've outlined a number of different terms and abbreviations you should know before getting a Blackberry.
The first and most important abbreviation is BB, which stands for Blackberry.
Furthermore, BBM stands for Blackberry Messenger.
Blackberry Messenger is a chatting program that is Blackberry specific and is similar to Yahoo chat, or AIM.
There are two different kinds of Blackberry servers.
The first is BES.
BES stands for Blackberry Enterprise Server, and is primarily used by big businesses.
It serves as a central link between Blackberry devices and allows a head user to have greater control over their employees' Blackberries.
The other kind of server is BIS, which stands for Blackberry Internet Server, and this is more for personal users.
Through BIS, one may have access to their yahoo or Gmail email.
The monthly service for specifically BIS is less than that of BES.
With so many Blackberries on the market, it is important to distinguish which one is for each carrier.
That can be done by looking at the frequencies of the device, which may be labeled CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, or GSM, which means Global System for Mobile Communication.
If you are in the United States, Verizon Wireless and Sprint are generally CDMA carriers, and T-Mobile and AT&T are generally GSM carriers.
Another important term with Blackberries is IMAP.
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol, which is used in the retrieval of email messages.
MMS is another key term, which stands for multi-media messaging.
Through MMS, one may send photos or videos or sound from their mobile device.
On the other hand, there is SMS, which is Short Messaging Service.
SMS generally means text messaging.
Finally, on Blackberries, there is a PIN, which stands for Personal Identification Number.
The PIN is usually used for BBM and unit identification.
