    Popular Looks

    • With the advent of MTV, artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson and their music videos influenced many new looks, including mini skirts, underwear worn as outerwear, fishnet stockings, fingerless gloves, leather jackets and parachute pants. Looks influenced by heavy metal, glam metal, punk, rap and British pop also emerged. Dancewear in spandex and Lycra such as leotards, leggings, oversized shirts, sweatpants and leg warmers became popular casual wear following the movie "Flashdance," Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" music video, the TV show "Fame" and the release of Jane Fonda's fitness videos all influenced popular styles.

    Corporate and Casual Fashion

    • The 1980s was also an economic boom period which saw more women entering the workforce full time. "Power dressing" became synonymous with ambition for the hoards vying to climb the corporate ladder with broad-shouldered, tailored suits with shoulder pads by designers including Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Georgio Armani popular among both men and women. The television series "Magnum PI" and "Miami Vice" made wearing T-shirts under designer suit jackets along with sports coats, mustaches, Hawaiian shirts and loafers trendy among men.

    Hairstyles

    • According to designer and artist Lisa Telo, asymmetrical hair styles were a trend during the 1980s as were mullets where hair was short on the sides and top of the head but grown long down the back and sometimes plaited or wound into a rat's tail. Other hair trends for both men and women included perming, crimping, teasing and big hairstyles using excessive amounts of mousse and hairspray as epitomized by rock bands such as Poison and Bon Jovi. Michael Jackson popularized the jheri curl among African Americans. Popular hair colors during the '80s were bleached-blond, plum-red and rich burgundy as well as other vibrant tones as worn by the girl group Bananarama and singer Cyndi Lauper.

    Shoes and Accessories

    • According to Fashion Historian Pauline Weston Thomas, the fashions worn by the characters in soap operas "Dallas" and "Dynasty" were influential during the 1980s. Large, glitzy, chunky costume jewelry and buttons featuring gold, pearls and diamantes became popular -- a trend called "excessorizing" in reflection of the excess wealth of the era. Doc Marten boots became fashionable among men and women, worn with anything from floral dresses to ripped jeans. The increasing popularity of Hip Hop within mainstream music circles with the arrival of groups like Run DMC and the rise of sporting icons such as basketball great Michael Jordan saw sneakers by Converse, Adidas and Nike become fashion accessories beyond the sporting field and into the casual and street wear scene.
