How to Draw Beautiful Roses & Crosses
- 1
Cross outline.
Use a straight edge to draw the cross. If necessary, draw both rectangles and allow the lines to overlap. Use your eraser to get rid of extra lines. - 2
Color in the base color.
Color in the cross with a base color, one that will complement the primary color of the cross. Using your colored pencil, color in diagonally, both from the top left to the lower right corner and from the top right to the lower left corner of your drawing. Also fill in the color by coloring vertically up the length of the drawing and horizontally, or across the drawing. This is the best way to fill in all of the white space. - 3
Give the illusion of sunlight and shadow.
Give the illusion of sunlight hitting the cross. Draw a line defining where the light hits the cross and where the cross is shaded. Use a warm color, like yellow or orange, to indicate the sunlight and a cool color, like gray, to indicate shade. Color in the spaces using the method in Step 2. - 4
Fill in and shade the cross.
Pick a new color for the whole cross, one you haven't used before, and color in the whole cross fully blending the colors that were underneath. Use a darker color than the one you just selected to shade around the edges of the cross and to give the illusion of depth. - 5
Embellish the cross.
Embellish the cross with designs of your choosing. Silver and gold pencil will appear strong on top of the other colors, where a duller color light brown may not come through as prominently. This is because of the different densities of the pencils and because silver and gold contrast from the other colors used on the cross, where brown would complement the colors already used and would blend in as a result. - 6
Draw the outline of a rose.
Draw the outline of a rose using a picture of one as a guide. Mark the folds of the petals lightly with your pencil. - 7
Shade the rose.
Apply shading to mark the darker parts and folds of the rose. Use lines to indicate the veins in the petals. - 8
Draw the stem and leaves.
Draw the stem and leaves of the rose. The ends of the leaves have sharp points. - 9
Apply color.
Apply color to the rose using your colored pencils. Blend colors and use techniques like shading and hatch marks. This adds depth and texture to your drawing.
