Types of Rings

• Because corset piercings are usually temporary, most piercings are done with ball closure rings or captive bead rings. Both are circular, which allows the ribbon to be threaded through to create the corset look. For individuals who want a permanent corset piercing, surface bars are used. These have a higher success rate than any other ring when used in corset piercings. Tygon bars are not recommended.
  
  

Aftercare

• Individuals who receive corset piercings must be serious about keeping them clean. This is sometimes difficult, considering the placement of the piercings. Use antibacterial soap and antibacterial ointment on the puncture sites. You may use cotton swabs to clean any crust around the area with soap and water. Use sea salt soaks in moderation, approximately once a week or less. Do not place ribbon in the piercings until the puncture sites have healed completely. Wear loose or backless tops while the piercing heals.
  
  

Healing

• Corset piercings are surface piercings, and they take longer to heal than regular piercings, such as the ears, nose or tongue. Because the skin is pinched and under stress, if you place a ribbon in before the puncture sites have healed, tugging may result in stretching of the holes. Full healing of corset piercings is never a 100 percent certainty, but with proper hygiene, clothing and care, healing time may decrease. It typically takes two months before any surface piercing is completely healed.
  
  

Risks

• While you may desire the look of a corset piercing, note that no piercing is without risk, especially a surface piercing. Rejection is the most common risk associated with corset piercings. Your body may recognize the piercing as a foreign object and subsequently push the piercings out of your body. This may lead to unsightly scars. Infection is another risk associated with corset piercings. If you do not take proper care to keep the area clean, the puncture sites may become red, inflamed and tender, and you may even notice a yellow discharge coming from the puncture site. In this case, you should see a doctor immediately.
