- 1). Create an underpainting by painting light values of color on the sketch. Light value may be created by thinning the paint or by mixing in a little white. The purpose of applying an underpainting is to build a foundation for the painting.
- 2). Add darker colors to the areas of the sketch in shade, while leaving areas in sunlight light. The sunbeam may be one direct source of light or diffused light that spreads throughout the painting.
- 3). Create a focal point with the lightest area contrasted against the darkest areas. The contrast will make the sunbeam brighter, drawing the viewer's eye to that area first.
