Advantages of Window Tint

• Automobile window tint may provide increased shade, which can lead to a cooler interior when driving in the sun, as well as increased protection against harmful UV rays. Window tinting also reduces potentially dangerous glare from the sun, snow or other vehicles' headlights. Measuring Window Tint

• Window tint is generally measured in VLT, or visible light transmission. This is the percentage of light that is allowed to pass through the tinted windshield. Both the tint film and the window may block light from passing. Most states specify whether the VLT refers to the tint film only, or the combination of the tint film and the window. If state law does not specify, it may be open to interpretation by local law enforcement.
  
  

Areas of Tint

• State regulations break down tint requirements by each window in the automobile. Front windshields are typically not permitted to have tint below a certain height. Often, this height is predetermined by the manufacturer of the automobile and is referred to as the AS-1 line. This line may be marked on the windshield and is usually 4 to 6 inches from the top of the windshield.
  
  Front side windows are regulated separately, using a VLT value. Rear side windows are also regulated separately. These may have the same requirements as the front side windows, or they may have different requirements or not be regulated at all. The same applies to the rear windshield.
  
  

Other Regulations

• State window tint laws also refer to the amount of reflectiveness permitted in the tinting film. Some tint film may contain metallic elements that give the film a mirrored effect. The level of this effect is regulated in some states. Some states may also regulate allowed colors of tint. In addition, states may regulate the mirrors of a vehicle with window tint. In many states, dual side mirrors are required if rear window tint is present. Some states require the tint be installed by a state-certified manufacturer/installer. In addition, some states require that a sticker be affixed to the automobile indicating a legal, state-certified tint film.
  
  

Other Considerations

• As window tint varies from state to state, and sometimes even from county to county, it is important to check local law. State window tint law is easily referenced online; however, these laws may change and vary, so find out the current regulations in the specific area of operation for the vehicle in question. In addition, it is important to know the regulations in place for other areas when traveling outside of the county or state. Local law enforcement may prosecute vehicles registered outside the jurisdiction under local law.
