Fastest Method

• The fastest way to start Windows XP with Service Pack 2 in safe mode is to use the F8 method. To do this, shut down your computer. After it's been off for at least 30 seconds, turn the computer back on. As the computer boots, begin pressing the "F8" key repeatedly. Try not to press F8 too soon or hold down the key, as this will not bring up the menu and will result in the computer beeping or displaying an error message. If you receive an error message, restart your computer and try again.
  
  If successful, the Windows XP Advanced Options menu will display offering a list of options. Use the arrow keys to select "Start Windows in Safe Mode," and press "Enter." Do what is needed to address the problem with the computer. When done, shut down and restart the computer in the normal way.
  
  

Another Method

• There is another way to start a Windows XP Service Pack 2 computer in safe mode. It uses the msconfig console to change the settings. To do this, start your computer as you normally do. Once your computer is booted, click on the "Start" menu and click "Run." Type "msconfig" in the box and press "Enter" or click "OK." The System Configuration Utility will open.
  
  In the utility's window, click the tab labeled "BOOT.INI." Check the box marked "/SAFEBOOT," then click "OK." You will receive a confirmation notice that you need to restart your computer to save the changes. Click "Restart." Your computer will shut down and will restart in safe mode.
