How to Tie a Renaissance Bodice
- 1). Decide whether you want your bodice to lace from the top or the bottom. Traditionally bodices that tie at the top were a sign of prostitution (because the top knot made it easier to expose the breasts), but in modern day, most women prefer a bodice that ties at the top rather than the bottom because it is easier to get into that way.
- 2). Thread the lacing through the top or the bottom two holes as you prefer. Pull the lacing until it is even on both sides, just like when you start lacing a shoe for the first time.
- 3). Thread each side of the lacing through the opposite side of the bodice through the next hole up or down (depending on how you chose to lace it). Again, this is exactly the same as you would lace a shoe. Take the right-hand lace through the next left-hand hole from the back to the front and vice versa.
- 4). Leave enough room to breathe as you tighten the lacing. Otherwise, pull it tight as you go along and tie it in a bow. If you feel uncomfortable about the ease of untying the bodice, double-knot the bow.
