What Flies Do I Use for Bluegills?
- A popper is made of either a light wood or cork material that floats on the water's surface. The popper typically has a tail made of feathers or fur that trails behind the main body of the popper. When fishing with a popper the strikes are visible as the fish will have to come to the surface to take the bait. Work poppers in small jerking motions through the water imitating an insect on top of the water.
- A foam spider is also good for catching bluegill on a fly rod. The foam spider will stay on the water's surface for a short time, especially when it's dry and will eventually begin to sink. This gives the fish plenty of chances to strike the bait. Top strikes are visible, and the angler must watch the line carefully for a strike once the spider sinks beneath the surface.
- The leech is a favorite of bluegills and can be found in many areas that bluegills like to frequent. A small-sized black leech fly with a 10 to 14 hook size will work. Cast the fly and allow it to sink down to the desired depth, just short of the bottom. Use a slow retrieve on the fly and watch for any movement in the line.
- Nymph flies in a wide array of colors are also ideal to catch bluegill. The appropriate hook size for a nymph fly is also 10 to 14 and the retrieval should also be very slow. Bring an array of colors as water clarity and conditions can make seeing the fly for the fish difficult. Watch the line for small movements.
