    • 1). Roll out your paper underlayment over the floor in overlapping courses, cutting them at the ends with a razor knife and stapling them down with a staple gun.

    • 2). Lay the first course of Belle Wood floorboards alongside the wall where you want to start, which is usually the longest wall in the room. Position the boards with their grooved sides facing the wall and sitting ½ inch from it (to allow for floor expansion).

    • 3). Secure the boards by shooting pairs of nails through the surface about every 16 inches. Cut the final board as needed on a miter saw.

    • 4). Lay the next courses alongside the first, tapping them into place with a rubber mallet so the tongue-and-groove fittings are tight. Shoot the flooring nails for the subsequent courses through the sides instead of the top, going in at an angle just above the tongue on the outside of each board. Shoot one nail per foot.

    • 5). Work your way across the whole floor. At the final course, cut the boards along their lengths on a table saw so they will fit against the ending wall with a ½ inch gap there. Top-nail the last course as you did the first course. Floor trim will cover the gaps at the walls.
