How to Freeze Bait Fish

104 1
    • 1). Choose a fish that freezes relatively well. These are fish that won't turn to mush when unfrozen. Pilchard and skipjack are well-known frozen bait fish.

    • 2). Apply a thin layer of salt to the top and bottom of the fish. This helps the fish retain its flavor when freezing.

    • 3). Lay the fish in the freezer bag in a single row. Don't overlap the fish or stack them on top of each other.

    • 4). Seal the bag tightly with a vacuum sealer if its available. This will give you bait fish that last the longest and stay fresh.

    • 5). Place one to two bags of fish in the freezer at one time. Lay the bags flat. Do not stack them on top of each other. If you have an industrial freezer, you can put in several bags at once.

    • 6). Turn the freezer down to one of the lowest settings so the fish freeze quickly. Once the bags are frozen, you can add more bags to the freezer to freeze. Stacking unfrozen on top of frozen bags won't hurt the freezing process.
