Can You Edit PDF Files in OpenOffice?
- One way to edit a PDF file in OpenOffice is to install an extension such as the Sun PDF Import Extension (see Resources). You must download and save the file to your system. When you open an OpenOffice application such as Writer, open the "Tools" drop-down menu and choose the :Extension Manager." Click "Add" and the locate the saved file on your system. When the extension is installed, any PDF file you open with OpenOffice can be edited with the "Draw" application.
- You can also edit a PDF file in OpenOffice by converting the file to a format such as Microsoft Word. One free program you can download to perform this task is called Free PDF to Word Doc Converter (see Resources). Once the file is converted, it can be opened with the OpenOffice Writer Application. When you are done editing the file, it can be converted back to PDF format by selecting "File" and then "Export as PDF."
- If you prefer to use an online conversion tool, one site that can convert a PDF file into many other formats is zamzar.com (see Resources). File formats include TXT and DOC, among many others. The site is free to use and has a 4-step process for converting files. Upload a file, select a format for the conversion, enter your email address and then click "Convert." When the conversion is complete, the file is sent to you via email. You can then open and edit it with OpenOffice.
