    Shaving

    • People who shave may feel they can't learn any new tricks. But Glamour magazine says many are shaving incorrectly. For the smoothest results, use a razor with built-in shave gel and shave hair in the direction that feels best to you. Some experts urge people to shave in the direction of hair growth, but in practice this might not result in the smoothest shave. Using additional shaving cream reduces discomfort. Save the knee and ankle areas for the end of your session so the cream has time to soak in, and use care in these areas since they are the most vulnerable to cuts and nicks. Shave slowly in the bikini area and consider purchasing a small razor specifically designed for the bikini line.

    Depilatory Creams

    • Hair removal creams offer a different approach. Apply the cream, wait a few minutes, and then rinse away extra hair. Many creams can be used on sensitive areas such as the bikini area or underarms. While convenient, remember depilatory creams contain strong chemicals that essentially burn off unwanted hair. Always spot-test these creams on a small, less-vulnerable part of your body before applying them on sensitive areas.

    Sugaring

    • For people who like the complete removal of hair offered by waxing but dislike the pain factor, body sugaring might be a good alternative. Used by Egyptian women as long ago as 1900 B.C., sugaring involves the application of a water-soluble sugar paste to the skin. This lukewarm paste is then pulled off, taking the hair with it. Of course, this is not a painless process, but the minimized risk of burning helps make it more tolerable for many women. Sugaring can be performed by professionals in a salon or make a paste at home using 2 cups sugar, ¼ cup lemon juice, and ¼ cup water heated to 250 degrees and cooled before being applied to your skin.

    Laser Hair Removal

    • The American Academy of Dermatology (ADA) touts laser hair removal as an effective, permanent and gentle hair removal method suitable for use on the face and body. Laser pulses feel like a snapping rubber band or warm pinpricks against the skin, according to the ADA. Be sure to use a professional dermatologist. Expect to spring for at least three sessions for permanent hair removal, with success varying depending upon the part of the body being treated.
