You may not be ready to shock your friends with a Mohawk, but you want a hairdo that's both in style and edgy. A new haircut is a great way to feel rejuvenated, and an even better way to express your individuality. Best of all, a new hairstyle isn't permanent---so if the edgy look doesn't work out, it'll grow back. A word of caution for those of you sporting a funky hairstyle for the first time: Stylist Stacy McCurdy of Hairfinder.com recommends making a gradual transition into a drastically different style. This way, you can get a feel for if the new look works for you.

    Short Styles

    • According to Hairstyle.com, to pull off an extremely short-haired look, you'll need delicate facial features or a heart-shaped, long or oval face. The rule of thumb when choosing a short 'do is to avoid layers that draw attention to disproportionate facial features. For example, to lengthen a round face, opt for fullness or spiky hair around the crown for a funky and flattering hairdo. If you're most proud of your eyes, dare to do an extremely short pixie cut like Emma Watson or a sultry bob with eye-length layers in the front like Rihanna. To add height to a round, square or heart-shaped face, try a short cut with length on top for volume. You can spike up the longer part of your hair in the style of rock star Pink by pushing it together at the crown with firm sculpting gel.

    Medium/Long Styles

    • Full razored bangs or side-swept bangs and flowing layers are widely popular right now---look at Nicole Richie, Zoey Deschanel and Reese Witherspoon. To "funk" up this popular look, try styling it a bit differently: curl the shorter layers out or into little ringlets, or pull half of it up into a teased bump and decorate it with your favorite clip. Dyeing the tips of razored layers can also look wild and fun.

    Styling

    • You don't need to get your hair chopped to pull off a funky look. Highlights, stripes, extensions or an entirely new hair color can instantly glam up your hairdo. Curls will have the same effect, but in order to keep that edgy look, it's best to avoid curling your hair all over. Instead, Hairboutique.com recommends interspersing a few waves through straight hair to add style and volume---or try doing a loose "beach wave" all over and pinning parts back with a clip.
