How to Finish a Basement Vapor Barrier

104 3
    • 1). Inspect the walls, studs and insulation for cracks or damage. Check to see that the studs are intact.

    • 2). Measure the perimeter of the basement to determine how much vapor barrier will be needed. Record the measurement of each side of the basement and add up the total linear feet.

    • 3). Staple the vapor barrier every 12 inches to the first stud beginning at the top and working down. Start in one corner of the basement and roll it out until reaching the next stud. Insert a staple every 12 inches, just like on the first stud, and continue around the basement in the same manner until reaching the end.

    • 4). Cut the excess vapor barrier with a utility knife once it has been installed on every stud. Inspect each stud to make sure there are no gaps and if necessary insert more staples to secure the sheeting.

    • 5). Check that the sheeting it pulled firmly around the entire basement and is not sagging. Verify that there are no wrinkles or cracks in the plastic and the top and bottom are secure throughout.
