Difference Between LDS Art and Other Forms of Christian Artwork

The Community of Christ and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (i.e. the LDS Church) are two separate branches of Christian churches that have the same traditions, beliefs in the Church of Christ founded by Joseph Smith. LDS Church is a Christian church that is considered as a restoration of the church founded by Jesus Christ. The LDS Church has more than 14 million members across the globe whereas the Community of Christ lists has around 250,000 members.

LDS artwork stands for Latter-Day Saint art, comprises visual art used to represent the principles, ideologies and teachings of LDS church. LDS art is an art created specifically for the LDS audience who are also called as Mormons. It includes painting, sculpture, quilt work, photography, graphic art highlighting latter day saint teachings and values.

There are many similarities between Christian artwork and Mormon artwork like Christ Paintings, Biblical History, Statues of Christ, Family pictures, Paintings of nature and Patriotic art. Few important ones are cited below:

1. Christ Paintings: This is the most important similarity as it also uses paintings of Christ being found in other denominations.

2. Statues of Christ: Both Mormons and other Christians have statues of Jesus Christ.

3. Paintings of nature: Paintings of valleys, mountains, lakes, forests, streams and other natural settings are usually there in most of the Christian homes.

4. Family pictures: Both artwork branches feel that remembering quality time and showing their families through photographs are essential.

The basic ideological difference between LDS and Christianity is that LDS Church members believe that God has a physical body whereas according to Christianity, God does not have flesh. Other differences between the two forms of art as described briefly below:

1. Restoration paintings: LDS artwork includes prophet paintings, paintings of Joseph Smith or other modern day prophets.

2. Temple art: Mormons are very fond of temples and thus many paintings and photographs of temples can be found in LDS homes.

3. Book of Mormon art: It is a holy book for the LDS members which has many stories portrayed visually through art.

4. Church history: The Mormon people are very proud of their heritage and one can find pictures of pioneers and other events that were held in the early history of the Mormon faith.

5. Pearl of Great Price: The LDS Church includes the Pearl of Great Price as a scripture and part of its standard works while the Community of Christ has never considered the Pearl of Great Price to be a scripture.
