Does My Sofa Have to Match My Loveseat?

    Commonalities

    • As a general rule, your sofa does not have to match your loveseat in your living room. If you do not have the budget to purchase matching furniture, look for the details in the fabric or couch designs to identify commonalities. More specifically, look at the upholstery, weave of the fabrics or the colors to match the sofa to a loveseat, if desired. You do not have to break your budget to get matching furniture at an expensive furniture shop.

    Slip Covers

    • Slip covers are a cheap solution if you have a sofa that does not match your loveseat but wish to have identical pieces. Slip covers are fabric covers for the couch's main base and frame, along with all pillows for both couches. Getting custom-sewed slip covers is a cheaper solution than purchasing a matching couch set. Slip covers are also ideal if your existing couch fabrics are dirty or stained.

    Cohesive Furniture and Decorations

    • Having a blue sofa and a brown loveseat might not match directly, but that does not mean you cannot create a cohesive design in your living room. Find a carpet that has similar shades to the blue and brown. Do not avoid purchasing a carpet if it is blue, brown and turquoise, for example, because you can add the turquoise shade as pillows on both couches or as vases on the living room table.

    Bold Colors

    • Some people purchase a bold-colored sofa, such as red or bright blue, and pair it with a black or white loveseat to create a shocking decor effect in a living room. The overall appearance of the two couches is similar, but the color separates the two. Bright colors are modern ways of making furniture stand out.
