How to Prevent Blotchiness as a Self-Tanner Fades

    Preparing For Self-Tanner

    • 1). Shave your legs to prepare for your tan. Use shaving lotion and a good, clean razor with a sharp blade to get a close shave.

    • 2). Exfoliate any areas of your body where you plan to apply the self-tanner. For best results, exfoliate daily starting several days before you apply the tanner.

    • 3). Apply moisturizing lotion while your skin is still damp from the shower and let the skin dry completely for several minutes to soak up all excess moisture.

    Applying Self Tanner

    • 1). Apply self-tanner sparingly. Use a light to medium tanner, not a dark one. You can always add more tanner the next day to achieve a darker color, but you cannot lighten your tan once applied.

    • 2). Use care applying around knees, ankles, toes, elbows and any other corners or pockets. These areas may collect lotion and turn out darker than the rest of your body.

    • 3). Rub the tanner into your skin with circular motions and make sure it is applied evenly. It will be easier to see where you have applied it if you use a tinted tanner.

    • 4). Wash your hands after applying tanner to each area of your body and before applying to another area. You don't want to turn your hands orange. Wear gloves if you have them.

    • 5). Never exfoliate after applying your self-tanner. Skip shaving for 48 hours after application. This will help keep your tan from fading and ensure that it fades evenly.
