How to Parge Concrete: FAQ

104 3
    • 1). Remove any loose concrete from the surface with a stiff wire brush.

    • 2). Walk a wheelbarrow over to the site of the work and empty one part lime, one part Portland cement and six parts sand into the bucket.

    • 3). Integrate the three materials with a shovel.

    • 4). Position the end of a garden hose over the bucket of the wheelbarrow and add small amounts of water to the cement, sand and lime mixture. As you slowly add the water, integrate it into the dry materials with a shovel. Stop adding water once the mixture has the consistency of peanut butter.

    • 5). Apply a 1/4 inch thick parge coat to the concrete with a flat, steel trowel. Apply the coating to the bottom of the wall and draw the trowel upward to create a smooth spread.

    • 6). Wait 24 hours while the coating dries, then dampen the concrete with a mist of water and apply a second parge coating.
