How to Tape & Texture Sheetrock
- 1). Mix up a tub of lightweight joint compound with a 10-inch taping knife. Apply the compound over all of the seams in the drywall with the taping knife. Spread out the compound in a smooth even stroke, 1/8-inch thick throughout. Cover all of the seams in the walls.
- 2). Apply self-adhesive drywall tape over the joint compound along all of the seams. Cut the ends of the tape with scissors.
- 3). Cover all of the tape with a second coat of joint compound beginning at the bottom of the wall and working up. Spread out the compound just like you applied the first coat. Allow the compound to dry overnight and sand down the compound with medium grade sandpaper.
- 4). Add a coat of topping compound over the first two coats. Apply it with an 8-inch taping knife just like you applied the first two coats and allow it to dry overnight. Sand it down with fine grade sandpaper.
- 5). Dip a texture brush into the topping compound and press the brush down firmly on the wall beginning at the top corner. Hold it in place and turn it slightly to get the appropriate texture. Place the brush right next to the first texture mark and repeat the process to texture the entire wall.
