How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a 2000 Ford Ranger
- 1). Park on a firm, level surface. Turn off all electrical accessories. Turn off the truck and block the front wheels.
- 2). Set the fire extinguisher near at hand and don safety glasses. Open the hood. Disconnect the battery's negative cable with a wrench.
- 3). Remove the cap from the Schrader valve on the fuel rail on the engine. Connect the fuel-pressure gauge to the Schrader valve. Insert the gauge's drain hose into the fuel container. Open the manual valve on the gauge slowly to release pressure. Gasoline released with the pressure drains into the fuel container.
- 4). Close the valve after the pressure is released and gas stops dripping from the drain hose. Disconnect the fuel-pressure gauge and reinstall the cap on the Schrader valve.
- 5). Jack up the rear of the Ranger and support the truck on jack stands.
- 6). Loosen the hose clamp on the filler-pipe hose with a screwdriver. Grasp the hose, twist and pull to remove the hose from the filler pipe. Siphon the gasoline from the tank through the filler-pipe hose into the fuel container.
- 7). Remove four bolts from the skid plate with a wrench. Remove the skid plate.
- 8). Employ your helper to support the tank. Remove two bolts from the fuel-tank support straps. Move the straps aside. Lower the tank slightly and disconnect the fuel-pump connector above the tank.
- 9). Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines as well as the vapor-tube fitting at the fuel pump and at the vapor-line fitting on the tank. Lower the tank to the ground.
- 10
Clean dirt and foreign matter from around the fuel-pump flange with a shop rag. Install the fuel-tank lock-ring wrench over the fuel pump's locking retainer ring. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to remove the retainer ring. - 11
Lift the fuel pump out of the tank slowly and carefully so as not to damage the float. Remove and discard the old fuel-pump mounting gasket. Discard the fuel pump. - 12
Clean the fuel tank's mounting surface and install the new gasket on the fuel-pump flange. - 13
Reverse the disassembly procedure to install the new fuel pump and the gas tank. Tighten the retainer ring to 66 pound-feet with the torque wrench. Tighten the support-strap bolts to 25 to 33 pound-feet. Tighten the hose clamps to 35 pound-inches. Tighten the skid plate bolts to 25 to 33 pound-feet. - 14
Remove the jack stands and lower the truck to the ground. Reconnect the battery's negative cable with a wrench.
