How to Remove a Vinyl-Coated Wallpaper Border
- 1). Cover your floors with your drop cloths; you'll want to protect your floors from damage from your wallpaper stripping solution. Cover your baseboards, window moldings and door moldings with the adhesive masking paper.
- 2). Run your hand underneath and above the border to feel for loose pieces or areas where the border paper is already losing its adhesive grip. Pull up on these areas and remove whatever paper you can with this method.
- 3). Roll your scoring tool over the vinyl surface of your border paper. The scoring tool creates holes in the vinyl coating, but the holes are small enough that they don't penetrate the wall beneath the paper.
- 4). Run your scraping tool across the face of the border paper to further score the vinyl and prepare the paper for stripping.
- 5). Add your stripping solution to your paint tray. Apply a generous coating of the stripping solution with your sash brush across the entire area of your wallpaper border.
- 6). Allow the wallpaper stripping solution to work for about 30 minutes before proceeding. You'll know the stripper is working when you see blisters form on the face of your wallpaper border.
- 7). Scrape away the wall paper border with your tool. Remove as much as you can. Repeat the scoring process and stripper application for stubborn areas.
- 8). Scrape away glue residue with your drywall knife. Soak your sponge in your bucket of warm, soapy water. Wash the area where your vinyl-coated wallpaper was once stuck.
- 9). Pull up and discard your drop cloth and masking paper.
