Ping G15 Irons Review

102 10
Company line: "The club's 'floating' Custom Tuning Port (CTP) moves more mass to the perimeter and increases MOI. Weight removed from the thin, light clubface is redistributed to the toe for added forgiveness. A wider sole contributes to higher launching shots. Stronger lofts (and the low, deep center of gravity) should lead to longer shots."
Our Testers say:
PROS: One of the top irons tested in its class; reliable, so simple-to-hit, forgiving and accurate; tight dispersion, no shot ever goes too far from its intended line; some testers find it to be longer, on average, than their current irons; straight-hitting sticks; handles shots from rough with style; produces repeatable distance (on mis-hits, too) and predictable high, straight ball flight.
CONS: Wide-ish sole and offset require an adjustment period; center hits and mis-hits feel too similar for some panelists; a few testers prefer a bit more shotmaking ability.
From Sports Illustrated Ping G15 Iron Set + Equipment Issue
The technology in the G15 produces the high-launch, maximum-forgiveness benefits that most golfers rely on for consistency in their iron play. Stronger lofts and a lower center of gravity result in longer shots without sacrificing the higher trajectory required in a forgiving iron.
From Golf Magazine (November 2009)
The updated CTP (Custom Tuning Port) increases perimeter weighting and MOI while a wider sole produces higher launch angles. A thinner clubface (by 5 grams) is said to increase ball speed (1-2 mph faster equals 3-6 yards longer carry than the Ping G15 Irons Set ). Strong lofts take full advantage of these high-launch characteristics for max carry.
Many players are curiously waiting for the next generation of the G15's, the G20, because they are looking forward to improve their game.
As for looks, apparently they are very similar to the Ping G15 Irons, with a slightly darker red and more satin finish. The adjustable lie on the G20 is two degrees flatter than the G15's.
Replacing the hugely successful and brilliantly performing G10 range was never going to be an easy task for Ping engineers, but with the launch of the new G15 line they look to have produced another winner. Ping unveiled the G15 model this year and so far the response has been extremely positive. And the technology of the Ping G15 Irons provides the high-launching, maximum forgiveness benefits that the majority of golfers rely on to bring consistency to their iron play.
A more curved look to it than the G15's with a new soft layer on the back to help with sound, feel and vibrations. The thinner face of the Ping G20 Irons helps position weight to the toe for added forgiveness. The wider sole provides a higher launch angle. Strong lofts and a low center of gravity produce long shots with a high trajectory and maximum forgiveness.
Ping G20 Irons features a new Custom Tuning Port which expands perimeter weighting and increases MOI. The steel shafts also look new, with more evenly spaced steps than the traditional AWT shafts, with a unique and interesting feel.
The Ping G20 Irons feature some added weight on the back end of the iron set that they stole from the tip/hosel section. It sits well and square, with a lower face height and sleeker look. It was described as a nice cross between the G15 and K15 model.
Overall, Ping Golf's line of G-series irons have always been ridiculously easy to use. The switch to something that actually helped you get the ball in the air, was a genuine revelation. Besides, like most series, the G20 fairway woods (golf clubs for sale) feature a very similar look with the driver: lower face height, sleek look, and great performance. I believe they will be better than the G15 line.
