Make Your Own Initial Art

106 5

I love making my own art for my home. Not only is it frugal, but it’s also a great way to add a unique touch to my home. This easy, initial art project from Scotchblue Painter's Tape would make a wonderful and inexpensive gift for those kids who just left for college, or for spelling out a child’s name or initials for their room. This is so easy, even your child could join in on the fun. In fact, the ideas are endless.

Purchase a larger canvas and use painter's tape to create geometric shapes. Voila! Instant living room or bedroom art!

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 2 hours or less

Here's How:
  1. Paint the entire panel the color you would prefer for your background color. Allow to dry.
  2. Use the ruler to draw your initial on your canvas. Mark your initial lightly in pencil.
  3. Using the painter's tape, tape off the shape of the initial that you would like to use.
  4. Apply your second color of paint to the initial. Allow to paint to set, but not dry completely. Remove tape.
  5. Allow to dry completely then hang.

Tips:
  1. Purchase extra panels or canvases to complete a name or three initials. To save time, work in stages. For example, paint the background color on all of the canvases at once; tape off all of the initials at the same time; etc.
  2. Use this idea to make inexpensive art for your home. Purchase a larger canvas and paint the background. Use painter's tape to mask off geometric shapes on your canvas. Paint the shapes the colors of your choice.

  1. If the paint sticks to your tape when removing it from the canvas, use an X-acto knife or straight-edge razor blade to gently score the tape so you can pull it away from the canvas and paint.

What You Need:
  • Thin, flat panel or mounted, primed canvas
  • Painter's tape (recommended brand is Scotchblue)
  • Acrylic paint in two (or more) coordinating colors
  • Paint brushes
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
