    • 1). Unplug the TiVo from the wall outlet. Remove all of the cables attached to its connectors. Rotate the TiVo so that the back faces you. Remove the screws from the back with a Torx screwdriver. Place the screws in a coffee cup to avoid losing them.

    • 2). Remove the cover from the TiVo. Locate the hard drive at the upper-right corner of the TiVo. Remove the screws from the posts on the bracket with the Torx screwdriver. Place the screws in the cup. Lift the drive up. Pull out the power and data connector plugs from its back.

    • 3). Unplug your computer. Open the side or back panel with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the side or back panel. Pull out the power and data cables from an empty drive bay in the computer. Plug each of these two cables in the appropriate slots on the back of the hard drive.

    • 4). Repeat this procedure with another empty drive bay and the replacement hard drive that will be going into the TiVo. Place each drive in its drive bay and close the side or back panel. Plug the power cord back in.

    • 5). Start the computer. Select the Terminal program from the "Start" and then "All Applications" pop-up menu. Enter "cat/proc/partitions" without the quotes in the text field of the window that appears. Press "Enter."

    • 6). Make a note of the name associated with the original TiVo drive and the replacement drive -- the number indicating the capacity of the drive will aid in this.

    • 7). Enter the following, without the quotes, in the text field: "backup -qTao - /dev/name of original TiVo drive | restore -s 128 -xzpi - /dev/name of the replacement drive" -- and press "Enter."

    • 8). Press and hold the computer's power button after the confirmation text appears on screen that the copy has been completed. Release the button once the computer shuts itself down.

    • 9). Let the computer cool for a half hour before continuing. Open the side or back panel and remove the two drives from the drive bays. Remove the cables from the drives, close the side or back panel and reattach the screws.

Place the replacement hard drive in the TiVo in the position that the original occupied. Attach the two plugs to the appropriate slots on the drive.

Run the screws through the drive's side holes and into the bracket. Tighten the screws. Place the cover back on and reattach the screws. Reattach the cables and plug the power cord in.
