How to Change a GM 3.8 Serpentine Belt

    • 1). Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal in a counterclockwise direction. Store the terminal away from the battery.

    • 2). Firmly press against the tension pulley arm to relieve tension on the primary drive belt. While the arm is depressed, slide the belt out from underneath the idle pulley wheel (on top of the 3.8 motors). Release the tension pulley arm, and there should be enough slack to remove the belt from the alternator and A/C compressor, if so equipped.

    • 3). Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by looping the belt from them one at a time. Make a note of the belt's path. Take the belt out from the engine compartment once it is free of all pulleys.

    • 4). Replace the serpentine belt with a new unit by placing it over the crank wheel first, then the remaining pulleys. The belt is grooved on one side and smooth on the other. Pulleys that require torque will also be grooved. Loop the belt over the crank wheel, then the water pump, then the power steering pump and air pump. Work the belt over the alternator and A/C compressor. Finally, press the tension pulley arm firmly, and slide the belt underneath the idle pulley wheel. Release the arm, and the belt will tighten around all pulleys.

    • 5). Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt in a clockwise direction.
