- 1). Connect the USB cable from your kill switch to the computer. You may also opt to connect it to the monitor, if the two components are separate and the monitor has a USB port. Connecting it to your monitor allows you to turn off the display -- hiding your work but saving your progress.
- 2). Install the software for the kill switch on your computer. The device should automatically install itself once it's plugged in. But if it does not, you may need to install the software from an accompanying disc, or by downloading a driver from the product's website.
- 3). Configure the program for your computer. This process will be different depending on the particular kill switch you're using, but you may want to consider which programs you want the kill switch to target. Some switches allow you to target specific programs, while others turn off your computer completely.
- 4). Place the kill switch somewhere where it will not be noticed. The purpose of a kill switch will be lost if it's obvious that you just turned off your computer. Some kill switches can be hidden under your desk and others can be operated like a peddle, by stepping on it lightly.
- 5). Test out your kill switch. Before you put the switch into use, it's a good idea to test it out a few times to ensure that it works properly and turns off everything as intended.
