How to Install Spark Plugs in a 2002 Honda Accord
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery terminal in your Accord. The negative terminal on the battery is marked with a minus (-) sign near the terminal. The negative cable is normally black in color. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt on the battery cable end and pull the cable off the terminal.
- 2). Move to the passenger's side of the car and look just below the valve cover on the cylinder head. The four spark plugs thread into the cylinder head here. Starting with the front cylinder, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Twist the boot side to side as you pull it off the spark plug.
- 3). Remove the spark plug from the cylinder head using a spark plug socket and ratchet. Turn the plug counterclockwise until loose, then pull it out of the head. Discard the old spark plug.
- 4). Insert a new spark plug into the hole in the cylinder head and turn it by hand to get it started in the threads. Tighten it until snug with a spark plug socket and ratchet. One the plug is snug, turn it about 1/4 turn more to secure it.
- 5). Place a small amount of dielectric grease in the spark plug boot, then install it onto the spark plug. This will help the boot come off in the future and repel water from inside the boot or around the spark plug.
- 6). Move to the next plug inline and repeat the procedure. Change the plugs one at a time, never pulling more than one spark plug wire off at a time. This will help ensure you do not change the firing order of the engine. If the firing order is wrong, the car will not run properly.
- 7). Reconnect the negative battery cable when you have completed all the spark plugs. Place the negative battery cable end on the battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Test run the car to ensure it is running properly.
