How to Fill Chips in a Sink Top
- 1). Wash the chipped area with water and a mild detergent like dish soap. Rinse off the soap completely and dry the area thoroughly. Put on the mask and gloves.
- 2). Sand away any rust. Don't let the sandpaper touch the unscratched areas of the sink because the sandpaper could cause new scratches. Wipe away the sanding debris with a clean, damp rag or paper towel, and dry the chip completely.
- 3). Feel the chip. Shallow chips need just a coating of epoxy sink paint, but deeper chips and divots need a filler. If the chip is very shallow, skip to Step 6.
- 4). Apply the filler compound with a putty knife. Apply one thin layer, let it dry, apply second thin layer, let it dry and so on until the chip is filled in.
- 5). Sand the dry compound down so that it's level with the rest of the sink. Pro Handyman recommends sanding with a light circular motion. Wipe away the debris.
- 6). Paint the chipped area with epoxy paint made for porcelain and enamel repairs, adding one coat. Home improvement stores may sell the paint alone or in combination with the filler. The paint usually comes in a bottle that has a small brush in the lid.
- 7). Let the coat dry. The manufacturer instructions may have different drying times for painting multiple coats and letting the whole patch dry before use.
- 8). Give the spot a second coat, again letting it dry completely. Dry times will vary by product, but in general you shouldn't get the area wet for at least 24 hours. FamilyHandyman.com advises not cleaning the area for one week.
