Inexpensive Palladium Window Treatments
- According to The Window Treatment Expert website, the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio invented the palladium window design (also known as Palladian and the sunburst) in the 1500s. The windows are characterized by their arched top-frames, which sit above larger central frames and may be flanked on either side by two smaller window sections. Due to their unusual shape, palladium windows can be both difficult and expensive to cover, but it is possible to find inexpensive palladium window treatments.
- One of the simplest and least expensive methods for covering palladium windows is straight hanging or using a standard horizontal curtains rod to hang drapes or curtains. You could hang one curtain/drape above the arched frame and have it cover the entire window complex. Try two separate sets of curtains--one that covers the arch and one that covers the central window. However, as the Home Decorating Reviews website points out, straight hanging takes away from the aesthetic appeal of the palladium window, as it hides the curved shape of the arches.
- To avoid "squaring off" the top arched portions of your palladium windows, you can simply leave them uncovered. The Window Treatment Expert website recommends framing your arches by incorporating valances--or decorative draperies that hide curtain fixtures--above central windows. The valances will extenuate the shape of your arches without covering any moldings or other detail work that might be incorporated in your palladium windows.
- If you want to provide some level of covering for your top arches but still do not want a squared look, you will need to use curved curtain rods. According to the Window Blinds Tips website, you can make these inexpensively by simply curving lengths of drapery rod so that they match the tops of your arches. Cut out pieces of fabric that are the same shapes as your arches (only slightly larger) and feed them on to the rods by using a series of slits or tie-ons. Secure the rods in place above the arches with mounting brackets.
- Another simple and inexpensive option for palladium window treatments is to avoid curtains and fabrics altogether, and use other decorative items. While you can still use traditional treatments for the central frames, when it comes to the arches, the Home Decorating Reviews website recommends covering them with fake flowers, vines, branches and other natural-looking materials.
