What Are the Basics for Planning a Wardrobe

104 7

    Your Unique Style

    • Start by determining your style. What image or vibe are you trying to project in your outward appearance? If you love a classic, feminine style, look for timeless pieces embellished with lace and ribbon. Maybe your style is comfort-based and sporty, or perhaps an edgy rock look is more your speed. Be honest with yourself. Understanding your style preferences will save you money and closet space later, since you will actually wear the clothes that you buy and store.

    Most Commonly Worn

    • With your style preferences in mind, it's time to decide what kind of clothes you need the most. If your job requires that you dress up every day and you rarely wear casual outfits, then spend the majority of your wardrobe budget on dressier items that make you feel and look great, but are also appropriate for work. Buying items that fit your everyday needs will result in fewer pieces that just sit in your closet unworn.

    Basic Pieces

    • While some people spend more time in jeans than others, jeans are widely considered a wardrobe staple. If you don't like jeans, another pair of casual pants, such as khakis, would be a good alternative. It's a good idea to have at least one good fitting pair of straight-legged jeans, as well as trouser jeans. These are great for wearing with heels on a night out or with casual shoes during the day. Also consider having at least ten to fifteen versatile tops that can be worn semi-casually, for example with jeans, or dressed up with accessories as well as layered under jackets for a more conservative look. Stick with fairly neutral pants and skirts, as they can be worn with nearly any blouse. Beige, brown, and black are colors that complement most other hues.

    Special Occasions

    • It's helpful to have a few pieces in your wardrobe for special occasions. A great suit is one. Instead of buying several suits of a medium or low quality, a better option is one suit in a neutral color that really looks great on you. This allows you to wear varying tops underneath the jacket and have a different look every time, while still appearing your best. The little black dress is another item every woman should have in her closet. Pick a length that makes you feel the most comfortable and will work in a variety of settings. While a very short dress might be spectacular for a night out, it might be less appropriate for other occasions.
