How to Create a Speaker Grill

104 2
    • 1). Measure the length and width of your speaker.

    • 2). Cut a piece of 1/2-inch medium density fiberboard to the dimensions of your speaker.

    • 3). Measure and mark 1 inch from the edges of the fiberboard with a square to form a rectangle on the board.

    • 4). Drill a 3/4-inch hole near the inside edge of the rectangle.

    • 5). Set your jigsaw to a 45-degree angle, then cut out the rectangle, forming a frame. The angle is to ensure the frame does not impede sound coming from the speaker. The wide side will be the back of the frame; the narrow side will be the front.

    • 6). Round off the outside edges of the frame with a router to prevent tearing the speaker fabric.

    • 7). Paint the frame to a color matching the speaker fabric, then wait for the paint to dry.

    • 8). Measure and cut a piece of fabric using the measurements of your speaker, adding 3 inches for both the length and width.

    • 9). Place the frame on the center of the fabric, front down.

    • 10

Apply multipurpose adhesive to the back of the frame, then spread it evenly with a brush.

    • 11

Fold the fabric over one corner of the frame, pressing it gently onto the glue. Then fold the fabric over the adjacent corner on the narrow edge of the frame. The fabric may be somewhat creased at this stage of the project.

    • 12

Fold the fabric over the two remaining corners, pulling it taut to remove most of the creases in the cloth.

    • 13

Wrap the cloth over one long side of the frame, using staples to keep it in place. Then wrap it over the opposite side, stapling it as you hold the fabric taut. Most creases in the fabric should now be gone.

    • 14

Adjust the fabric on the corners to remove the remaining creases. Then staple the fabric to the corners and short sides of the frame.

    • 15

Trim the excess cloth from the frame with a sharp utility knife.

    • 16

Nail the speaker grill to the speaker using a 1-inch finishing nail in each corner.
