    Barn Types

    • The main types of barns are pole barns, post-and-beam barns, modular barns and steel barns. Pole barns are made of giant wooden beams that connect to supporting columns. Post-and-beam barns are also made of wood, but the wood consists of giant wooden timbers and beams. Modular barns can be made of a variety of materials, but they are generally smaller and assembled in part at a different location before they are shipped to their place of use. Steel barns are made of giant steel beams.

    Barn Styles

    • The main styles of barns are gable, gambrel, bank and monitor barns. Gable barns have triangular roofs and they are usually the lease expensive kind of barn. Gambrel barns have a large roof with a two-tiered slope, which provides more attic space. Bank barns are usually built on a slope and have multiple entryways. Monitor barns have a raised central portion of the roof, in order to allow farmers to monitor the activity in a large landscape.

    Stable Types

    • The methods for housing animals and livestock are traditional stabling and barn stabling. Barn stabling refers to keeping animals, specifically horses, in individual units in a large barn. Traditional stables, by contrast, have a large yard that connects a bunch of individual units, such that animals may freely move from their individual areas to communal areas. Traditional stabling leaves the option of whether or not to shut off animals from the communal areas in order to isolate them for cleaning and feeding.

    Stable Flooring

    • The two basic types of stable floors are pervious floors and impervious floors. Pervious floors, usually consisting of a dirt, clay and sand mixture, allow urine, food, water and other waste to slip into the ground and be absorbed. Impervious floors are impenetrable by waste, and they are usually slanted in order to allow waste to drain to a certain location of the stable. Impervious floors may be made from wood, steel or concrete that is covered with softer material.
