How to Cut a Tile Backsplash
- 1). Mark out the area you want for your backsplash, using a level and pencil. Make sure the corners are square, using a small carpenter's square to check them.
- 2). Draw a vertical line through the center of the backsplash area. Spread tile adhesive over the whole area. Press your tiles into place on the wall, starting at the bottom row in the center (on either side of your marked line). Build up and out to the top and sides, hanging as many full tiles as will fit. Put tile spacers between each of them.
- 3). Measure the remaining space for any necessary cuts for partial tiles at the edges of the backsplash. For each tile, mark the measurement on the tile's face, set it on your tile cutter, use the tile cutter blade to score a line across the tile face, and snap it at the line with the pressure prongs of the cutter.
- 4). "Butter'' the backs of the trim tiles, using your trowel. Set them around the perimeter of the backsplash, putting spacers between them. Cut the trim tiles at the ends to fit, as necessary. Let the tiles set overnight, and remove the spacers.
- 5). Spread grout over the whole backsplash with a grout float, forcing it into the spaces between the tiles. Wipe off the excess grout with a damp sponge.
